Book gem…

Having a regular supply of fresh produce in the garden and more often than not having limited ideas about how to use it, I’ve been looking for a good book that is a simple guide to preparing and cooking vegetables.  Stephanie Alexander is a well known Aussie gardener and chef and her book, “Kitchen Garden Companion” is exactly what I was looking for.

The index is organised alphabetically by listing the particular fruit or vegetable.

As an example, if you were looking for information about corn, you could simply look in the index for “corn” then turn to page 265.

On page 265 the reader is provided with a detailed description of planting & growing techniques, common problems and basic growing advice.  Then there are tips on harvesting, preparing and cooking.  There are a couple of good and easy to follow recipes as well including the obligatory sweet corn soup and corn fritters.

Stephanie has also established the Kitchen Garden Foundation which is a program run through local schools to educate kids about positive food habits and food gardens. Click on the link below to take a look at this great program.
